چکیده

The separation factor, aM-0= ( 1 8 0 / 1 6 0 ) magnetite/' ( 1 8 0 / 1 6 0 ) atmospheric oxygen, between the magnetite crust of iron meteorites and atmospheric oxygen has been determined to be 0.9946 ± 0.0005. It is concluded that this fractionation of the oxygen isotopes is the consequence of an equilibrium isotope effect at high temperatures. It can be assumed that this is also valid for cosmic spherules, which are mainly ablation products of iron meteorites. As these spherules are found in sediments of different geological ages, their oxygen isotope ratio can give information on the development of atmospheric oxygen. The difference of the oxygen isotope ratios between magnetite from the lithosphere and airborne magnetite can be used to distinguish between terrestrial and extraterrestrial material.

Oxygen Isotope Compositions of Mineral Separates from Snc Meteorites: Constraints on the Petrogenesis of Martian Magmas

Introduction: Martian (SNC) meteorites are igneous rocks that range from a reduced, trace-element depleted end member to an oxidized, trace-element enriched end member [1-3] (Figure 1). One interpretation of this trend is that relatively reduced, depleted magmas are partial melts of a reduced peridotitic mantle, whereas more oxidized, enriched magmas are mantle-derived magmas contaminated by ox...

Sulphur isotope geochemistry

Ab&r&-Sulphur isotope abundances of thirty-nine specimens of seventeen meteorites are reported. The resultril show again the remarkable constancy of the sulphur isotope ratios for meteorites of all types. However, differences in the SBa/Sa* ratios of 0.4 %a would appear to be significant. The Ssz/P4 ratio for meteorites is discussed as a possible base level from which fr~tion&tion in the earth’...

Oxygen Isotope Compositions of Mineral Separates from Snc Meteorites: Constraints on Snc Parental Magmas

Introduction: Martian (SNC) meteorites are igneous rocks from young (except for ALH 84001, which is much older), thick lava flows or shallow intrusions [1]. The shergottites (‘S’ of SNC) can be categorized according to LREE depletion into highly, moderately, and slightly depleted groups [1]. The La/Lu ratio (and other depletion indicators) is positively correlated with oxygen fugacity, and this...

A long-standing question in the planetary sciences asks what the Earth is made of. For historical reasons, volatile-depleted primitive materials similar to current chondritic meteorites were long considered to provide the `building blocks' of the terrestrial planets. But material from the Earth, Mars, comets and various meteorites have Mg/Si and Al/Si ratios, oxygen-isotope ratios, osmium-isoto...

Searching for signatures of life on Mars: an Fe-isotope perspective.

Recent spacecraft and lander missions to Mars have reinforced previous interpretations that Mars was a wet and warm planet in the geological past. The role of liquid water in shaping many of the surface features on Mars has long been recognized. Since the presence of liquid water is essential for survival of life, conditions on early Mars might have been more favourable for the emergence and ev...
